Walter Scott Ryder was born outside Boston, Massachusetts, in the town of Norfolk, on March 11, 1892. Joining the war effort from Spencerport, New York, on August 1, 1918, he was a Physical and Recreational Director with the Y.M.C.A. at Fort Dupont, Delaware City, Delaware. He completed his service in January 1919. Walter S. Ryder passed away on May 26, 1956.
